His first coach was Ando Palginõmm. He has also been coached by Helgi Parts, Aleksander Tammert senior and Uno Ojand who still is the technical consultant of Team75plus. In 2000 he started to work with Vésteinn Hafsteinnson who is a former discus thrower and the record holder of Iceland. In his early age Gerd studied in Vana-Vigala elementary school, Pärnu-Jaagupi high school and Tallinn University of Technology.
